What: “Off Course With Jack Wagner”

Where: ESPN, today, 4:30 p.m.

Actor Jack Wagner, a scratch golfer, talks with celebrities in a comfortable setting while playing golf in this half-hour show that makes its debut today. Others, such as Ann Liguori and Peter Jacobsen, have done similar shows, but this one, as the title suggests, is a little offbeat. Your first hint will be the appearance of a mariachi band on the putting green, in honor of the show’s first guest, Alex Rodriguez, who plays to a 10 handicap.

The Texas Ranger shortstop--and baseball’s highest-paid player--also takes Wagner to the ballpark and shows him a few things about baseball.

While playing at a Dallas country club, Rodriguez gladly fields some off-beat questions--and asks some too. One thing he wants to know is which actress, in Wagner’s opinion, is the best kisser. Wagner, best known for his roles as Dr. Peter Burns in “Melrose Place” and as Frisco Jones in “General Hospital,” says Heather Locklear.

That may be a diplomatic answer, since Locklear will be the featured guest on the second show June 18. Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura will be on the third show June 25.

“Off Course,” which precedes “Mohr Sports,” will move to a 5:30 p.m. time slot in September.

One aspect of the show is some fun facts that pop up on the screen. One informs viewers that in the time it takes to play 18 holes of golf, Rodriguez has made $35,000.
