Yankees Are Hurting After Loss to Indians
After losing Roger Clemens and the game, New York Yankee Manager Joe Torre saw at least one thing that made him feel better--Raul Mondesi was moving around.
Mondesi hurt himself crashing into the right-field wall trying to catch Omar Vizquel’s run-scoring triple in the 10th inning, and the Cleveland Indians defeated New York, 2-1, Friday night at Cleveland.
Earlier, Clemens left the game because of a strained right groin.
“I felt better when I saw [Raul] moving his limbs,” Torre said. “When he’s laying there still, you’re scared to death.”
Mondesi’s right shoulder and head slammed into the wall, and he fell to the ground as the winning run scored. Mondesi remained on the warning track for several minutes before standing up and walking over to a cart that drove him from the field.
“He got the wind knocked out of him,” Torre said. “He never lost consciousness. I think it was his sternum and knees. Hopefully it is nothing more than a shaking up.”
Einar Diaz opened the Cleveland 10th by beating out a slow roller to second baseman Alfonso Soriano, who tried to backhand the ball over to first base, but threw it past Nick Johnson.
After Chris Magruder popped up a bunt attempt for the first out, Vizquel hit a 3-2 pitch from Steve Karsay into the gap in right-center. Mondesi, acquired two weeks ago from Toronto, made a valiant attempt for the ball, which ricocheted into center field as Diaz easily scored.
Clemens left after five scoreless innings. He gave up two hits and struck out four but remained winless in five starts since June 9.
Vizquel helped the Indians tie it in the eighth, 1-1, and end Mariano Rivera’s streak of consecutive saves at 17. With two on and two out, Vizquel bounced a single to left off Rivera, past the outstretched glove of diving shortstop Derek Jeter, to score pinch-runner John McDonald from second.
Seattle 2, Tampa Bay 1--Jamie Moyer pitched two-hit ball over 7 1/3 innings, Bret Boone had an RBI single in the sixth, and Desi Relaford drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth when he grounded into a force play with the bases loaded at St. Petersburg, Fla. Moyer (9-4), who struck out the side in the sixth, retired the last 11 batters he faced.
Toronto 5, Boston 0--Roy Halladay outpitched Derek Lowe in a matchup of All-Stars and the Blue Jays ended an 11-game losing streak with a victory at Toronto. Jose Cruz Jr. homered, tripled and doubled for the Blue Jays, and he also drove in three runs. Halladay (10-4) and Kelvim Escobar combined on a three-hit shutout. Halladay gave up three singles in eight innings.
Oakland 1, Baltimore 0--Tim Hudson outpitched Jason Johnson and Miguel Tejada drove in the game’s only run in the first inning for the Athletics at Baltimore. Oakland scored in the first when Mark Ellis hit a double and came home on a single by Tejada. Hudson (7-7) improved to 6-0 in six career starts against the Orioles.
Minnesota 4, Texas 3--Jacque Jones hit a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th to drive in Dustan Mohr with the winning run for the Twins at Minneapolis. Trailing 3-2, the Rangers tied it in the ninth off closer Eddie Guardado. Ivan Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly to center scored Juan Gonzalez.
Detroit 2, Chicago 1--Mark Redman gave up four hits and walked three in six-plus innings and Juan Acevedo got four outs for his 15th save in 18 chances for the Tigers at Detroit.
