Wanted: Camaro Drivers to Cruise Memory Lane

The Chevy Camaro has been part of the American car culture since bowing as a 1967 model, General Motors Corp.’s answer to the wildly popular Ford Mustang.

Now GM is killing the Camaro and its Pontiac Firebird cousin, which arrived as a late-’67 model. There are rumblings about secret plans to revive the brands with a new look, but that may just be wishful thinking. (Given what GM did in bringing back the Impala, resurrections aren’t necessarily something to wish for.)

We don’t want the passings to go unremarked, so we are inviting Highway 1 readers to send us their memories.

Short stories of Camaros and Firebirds owned, past and present--200 words maximum--and color photos or high-resolution JPEG-format digital images will be gratefully accepted at Los Angeles Times, Highway 1-Camaro Copy, 202 W. 1st St., Los Angeles, CA 90012; or highway1@latimes .com (put “Camaro” in the subject field). And include your name, city and phone number so we can contact you if there’s a need.

Submissions that make us laugh, cry or run out and buy one of the vanishing vehicles will be printed, either in a special “remembering the Camaro” issue or from time to time during the remainder of the year as space permits (obviously we haven’t thought it all out yet). And everything is subject to editing--even our own golden prose often is polished a bit before seeing print.

P.S.: We keep whatever you submit; no returns. So don’t send the only picture in existence of your beloved ‘67!
