A Tutor, a Student: Wide Ripples of Hope

Thank you for bringing to light the story of Victor Samayoa and his tutor, Armando Herman (June 27). When most conversation seems to drift toward security threats, the hopelessness of the Middle East, American corporate thievery and the sexing-up of our preteen daughters, I’m grateful for people like Herman, who set aside their personal interests for an intangible greater good.

To read about Herman and Samayoa reminds me that all is not lost, that it doesn’t take an event with the magnitude of Sept. 11 to know that for every act of plain meanness in the world there are probably a million acts of selflessness and dedication to the advancement of the human spirit. As the father of an autistic child, I thank God for men and women like Herman (and Samayoa) and the wide ripples of hope their courage and friendship create.
