Former Peruvian spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos was convicted of abuse of authority and sentenced to nine years in prison in the first of 100 trials he faces on charges ranging from corruption to ordering murder.
Standing stone-faced, Montesinos, 57, heard the sentence in a courtroom at the naval base in Lima, the capital, where he has been held since his capture in Venezuela in June 2001.
A court spokeswoman said the sentence would include time already served and run until June 2010. Judge Saul Pena also fined Montesinos $2.85 million.
