Chechen Rebels Attack Security Service Building
From Times Wire Reports
Rebels attacked the headquarters of the Russian Federal Security Service in Grozny, the Chechen capital, firing grenades and automatic weapons, the agency said. No one was injured.
The agency, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, last year took charge of directing the war in the separatist region of the republic of Chechnya, which Russia terms an anti-terrorist operation.
Russian officials contend that the rebels are on the verge of defeat, but the insurgents torment Russian forces with near-daily small attacks.
