A Ft. Bragg soldier taking part in an exercise off the base was killed and another was seriously injured in a shooting after a sheriff’s deputy stopped them on a rural road, authorities said.
The soldiers, thinking the deputy was taking part in the exercise, tried to disarm him and were shot, officials said. They were dressed in civilian clothes and had weapons, but they did not carry live ammunition during the exercise, a military official told a newspaper.
The paper reported that the soldiers’ vehicle was stopped Saturday by Deputy Randall Butler near Robbins, about 25 miles from Ft. Bragg.
The sheriff’s department offered few details. No charges had been filed; Butler was put on paid leave.
