Three of the top-selling U.S. master-planned communities in 2001 were in Southern California, according to Robert Charles Lesser & Co., a real estate advisory firm.
Irvine Ranch ranked third; Valencia, 13th; and Sun City Palm Desert, 17th. For the fifth year, Summerlin in Las Vegas was the top-selling community.
Supporting national trends and data citing record-breaking years for new and resale homes, sales at master-planned communities were up an average of 2.1% in 2001.
Most of the top-selling communities were in the Sunbelt region of the country, typically in markets with rapid population growth and strong employment growth. Five of the top 20 were in Phoenix and five in Florida.
