Festival of Arts, City May Be Rent-Reconciled

The Festival of Arts this week paid the city $637,716, or 13.75% of gross sales, from last year’s Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters.
The check, presented to Mayor Wayne Baglin at Tuesday’s City Council meeting, signals agreement between the festival and city over how much rent the nonprofit organization should pay.
A dispute over the amount resulted in the October 2000 recall of a majority of the festival’s board, which had proposed moving the popular annual event to San Clemente.
The festival and the city are now negotiating a new lease.
The current lease expires Sept. 30.
