Judge Enters Plea for ‘Oddfather’ Mobster

A judge entered a not guilty plea for Vincent Gigante on charges that the convicted Mafia boss, known as the “Oddfather” for behavior such as walking city streets in a bathrobe, was running the Genovese crime family from prison.
Gigante’s attorney, Gary Greenwald, told a Brooklyn federal court that his client was unable to enter a plea “because of his state of mind.” Greenwald indicated he would seek a hearing to determine his client’s competence to stand trial.
The government has argued that Gigante feigned mental illness to delay prosecution. Gigante is serving a 12-year sentence for a 1997 racketeering conviction.
