Court Orders Retrial for Rights Activist

Egypt’s top appeals court ordered a retrial for Egyptian American rights activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim, who had been sentenced to seven years in jail for defaming the state.
The court also said Ibrahim, one of Egypt’s most vocal and well-known rights campaigners, would be freed from prison pending retrial. It gave no explanation for the ruling.
Ibrahim, a professor at the American University in Cairo, was convicted in May of illegally receiving funds from the European Commission to monitor elections and defaming Egypt in reports about relations between Christians and Muslims.
