War on Terrorism Misses the Mark

So Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld wants us to believe that evil Iran is aiding the Taliban (“Iran Helped Al Qaeda and Taliban Flee, Rumsfeld Says,” Feb. 4). This would, of course, require us to ignore the fact that Iran was fighting against the Taliban while the CIA was still supporting it. There is no love lost between the Taliban, or the Saudi-backed Al Qaeda, and Iran. Rumsfeld’s claim is disingenuous and intended to set the stage for a wider war.
On the other hand, Pakistan is clearly helping transfer fighters out of Afghanistan into Kashmir, and India is supporting the Northern Alliance with funds and weapons. Why doesn’t the “axis of evil” run through New Delhi and Islamabad?

I see that Sen. Joseph Lieberman has joined forces with Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz and the other right-wing troglodytes in threatening war against Iran, Iraq and whomever (“U.S. Defends Terrorism War to Wary Allies as a Righteous Fight,” Feb. 4). If this is one of our leading Democrats, this country is in big trouble.
