Bridge to Nowhere

Seeing “A Span Without a Reason, Frozen in Time” (Jan. 31) brought back memories. My father, Fred Strong, was the resident L.A. County engineer on that project, which was indeed constructed with prison labor. A high school friend and I hiked in the area many times and found caves and miners’ diggings, which we explored. It was a beautiful bridge, but I never saw it again after the big storm. I remember how disappointed we were when the road was closed so many years ago.
