Lone War Dissenter Gets Thousands in Donations

Rep. Barbara Lee’s opposition to military retaliation for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks earned her death threats and hate mail. It also has garnered Lee thousands of dollars from those who applaud her stance, including entertainers Bonnie Raitt and Bill Cosby.

According to campaign records, the Oakland Democrat has pulled in $177,280 since June, more than twice what she typically raises. Of that, $124,909 poured in after Lee voted against the rest of Congress in September. Her 9th District seat, including the historically dovish cities of Oakland and Berkeley, is up for reelection this year.
