Joe-Max Moore could be on his way back to Major League Soccer with the Kansas City Wizards.

Moore’s work visa in England expired, and the 31-year-old American forward can no longer play for Everton of the Premier League.

“Joe-Max Moore is someone who we are interested in,” Wizard General Manager Curt Johnson said on the Everton Web site. “He’s a great player and he has local ties to the Midwest and Oklahoma. We have some space under the salary cap, so we are able to look at a guy like Joe-Max.”

Moore hasn’t played this season for Everton, and the team did not apply for a new permit even though seven months remain on his contract.

He joined Everton in December 1999 from the New England Revolution of MLS and has scored 10 goals in 64 games. He also has played with Nuremberg and Saarbruecken in Germany.

Moore has 24 goals in 100 games for the U.S. team, second behind Eric Wynalda’s record 32 goals.

World Cup skiing champion Stephan Eberharter of Austria was cleared to compete in a downhill Sunday, returning a week earlier than anticipated from a Dec. 15 knee injury.

Eberharter, 33, completed a trial run Wednesday without pain. Doctors cleared the five-time winner this season to race at Bormio, Italy, the Austrian Ski Federation said.

“It was really terrific,” Eberharter told Austria Press Assn. “Every so often I felt a little bit of pulling, but otherwise had no pain anymore. It went great.”

Eberharter was hurt when he crashed during a giant slalom at Val d’Isere, France, and doctors didn’t believe he would be ready for Bormio.

World Boxing Organization middleweight champion Harry Simon of Namibia broke an arm and a leg during a head-on collision last month in an accident in which three Belgian tourists, including a 22-month-old girl, died.

Simon, 30, has been charged with culpable homicide in the Nov. 21 accident near the beach resort of Langstrand, Namibia.

Simon is scheduled to defend his title in March, but WBO officials are awaiting the outcome of legal proceedings.

According to witnesses, Simon’s car crashed into the Belgians’ pickup truck. Police said blood samples were taken from Simon to determine if he had been drinking.

In April 2001, Simon was in a car accident in which two Namibians died. The boxer’s blood samples disappeared after that accident and the case has not been resolved.
