Two men were killed and two injured in a high-speed street racing accident Saturday, according to Pomona police.
Pomona residents Jose Batres, 26, and Carlos Mendoza, 20, died after the orange 1993 Honda they were riding in struck a van, went out of control and hit a tree, said Pomona Police Sgt. Michael Ervin Sr.
Ervin said the Honda’s driver, 22-year-old Jamael Johnson of Pomona, was racing about 1:30 p.m. with an unidentified white vehicle at speeds of more than 100 mph while southbound on Gary Avenue. The Honda struck a van driven by Omar Arebalo, 42, who was turning left from the northbound lanes.
Batres died at the scene, and Mendoza died at St. Francis Hospital. Arebalo was listed in stable condition and Johnson in critical condition, Ervin said. The white vehicle left the scene.
