* Monsanto Co. Chief Executive Hendrik Verfaillie resigned after company shares fell by almost half this year amid losses. Chairman Frank Atlee will assume the post until a successor is found.

* General Electric Co. agreed to buy Finland’s Instrumentarium for $2.1 billion in cash, adding anesthesia and heart monitoring equipment to its GE Medical Systems subsidiary.

* Intersil Corp., an Irvine maker of computer chips for wireless PCs, cut its fourth-quarter profit estimate to 18 cents a share from 20 cents, excluding some items. Sales are expected to drop 5% to 7% from the third quarter, the company said. It had forecast an increase of as much as 3%.
