Modano Left Seeing Stars
Without Mike Modano, the Dallas Stars couldn’t put away the Philadelphia Flyers.
Keith Primeau and Mark Recchi scored power-play goals 59 seconds apart in the third period, lifting the Flyers into a 2-2 tie with Dallas in a matchup of first-place teams Tuesday night at Philadelphia.
Modano and Jason Arnott scored for Pacific Division-leading Dallas, which has the best record in the NHL at 18-7-7-1. The Flyers, first in the Atlantic Division at 15-7-7-1, are unbeaten in their last four (3-0-1).
Modano gave the Stars a 1-0 lead after only 29 seconds with his 13th goal, but left the game less than five minutes later after being checked hard into the boards by Jeremy Roenick. Roenick’s check drew a major penalty.
Modano complained of headaches, and didn’t return. The Stars ruled out a concussion and Modano could be ready for Dallas’ game at Detroit on Thursday.
“He’s feeling all right. For precautionary reasons I kept him out,” Star Coach Dave Tippett said. “It motivated our team.”
Primeau got the Flyers within 2-1 on his eighth goal with 8 minutes 50 seconds left. The Flyers got the tying goal when Recchi tried a pass to Primeau, who was skating toward the net, but the puck struck a Star defenseman and went over goaltender Marty Turco’s shoulder, tying the score with 7:51 remaining.
It was the first game for Flyer Coach Ken Hitchcock against his former team. Hitchcock was fired by the Stars on Jan. 25.
Detroit 2, New York Islanders 2 -- Luc Robitaille’s third-period goal completed Detroit’s comeback at Uniondale, N.Y. Curtis Joseph started for the Red Wings and stopped nine of 11 shots before being pulled for Manny Legace to start the second period. Legace then stopped all 21 shots.
Minnesota 4, Edmonton 3 -- Richard Park scored the tying goal in the third period and then won it in overtime as the Wild won for the first time over the Oilers. Park picked up a rebound in front with 16.3 seconds remaining in overtime, and lifted a shot over Edmonton goalie Jussi Markanen at St. Paul, Minn. Minnesota was 0-7-2-3 against Edmonton until Tuesday.
San Jose 3, Montreal 1-- Patrick Marleau had a goal and an assist, and Evgeni Nabokov made 23 saves for the Sharks at Montreal.
Calgary 3, Nashville 0 -- Roman Turek, playing his 12th straight game, stopped 23 shots as the Flames won at Nashville, Tenn.
Chicago 3, Vancouver 2 -- Kyle Calder scored a power-play goal with one second left to lift the Blackhawks at Vancouver, Canada.
Phoenix 5, Pittsburgh 2 -- Phoenix rookie Ramzi Abid, recalled three days earlier from the minors, had two goals and an assist as the Coyotes won at Phoenix.
The Penguins are winless in their last nine (0-8-0-1).
