Appeals Court Upholds Verdict Against Police
From Times Staff Reports
The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday affirmed a $1.7- million verdict against the city of Long Beach and two detectives for violating the rights of a man wrongly arrested in 1998 as a serial rape suspect.
A federal jury in 2000 awarded damages to Jeffrey Grant, finding that Dets. Katherine Watson and Joe Bahash lacked probable cause for his arrest and three-month detainment before DNA evidence cleared him.
A three-judge panel of the court agreed. The city prosecutor’s office said it will seek a rehearing by the full court.
