Mourners Gather Where 4 Died in Icy River
With a sudden impulse to slide on ice, 11-year-old William Rodriguez scurried 25 feet from a river’s bank and, with six friends looking on, plunged through.
Moments later, he and three of the other boys who raced out to save him were fatally trapped beneath the ice of the Merrimack River in Lawrence.
On Sunday, a steady stream of mourners placed religious tokens, flowers, toys and candles bearing the names of the four boys -- William; Mackendy Constant, 8; Victor Baez, 9; and Christopher Casado, 7 -- on a muddy berm overlooking the place where they had played together the day before.
