Panel Backs Proposed Vehicle Seizure Law

Motorists arrested for soliciting a prostitute in the city could permanently lose their vehicle to the city under a proposed law recommended Monday by a City Council panel.

The Public Safety Committee unanimously endorsed the vehicle forfeiture measure, which is scheduled for a vote by the full council Friday.

The measure would allow police to seize a car used by a motorist in soliciting a prostitute. The owner could challenge the seizure in court, but if a judge approved the forfeiture, the car would be sold and the city would get the money.
