Serra High Backers Seek Citywide Vote on Site
Supporters of a religious high school have submitted petitions that could force a citywide vote on a proposal to rezone a parcel of land to allow construction of Serra High School.
The signature campaign is intended to clear the way for construction of the school at the intersection of Camino Capistrano and Junipero Serra Road. A hotel and commercial facility are planned for the site.
Plans to build the school on nearby land owned by a Christian ministry fell through when the Rev. Robert Schuller’s Rancho Capistrano ministry said it was uncomfortable that religious instruction at the school would be given by Roman Catholics.
If city officials determine that Serra High boosters have submitted enough valid signatures, the City Council would be obligated to put the matter to a citywide vote.
