Bicyclist Dies After Being Hit by Car at Intersection
A Ventura man died after being struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Johnson Drive and Telephone Road. It was the second fatal accident at that intersection in the last two weeks.
Police said Dwight Spargur, 53, was bicycling along Johnson Drive with his wife and started to turn east onto Telephone Road when he was struck by a northbound vehicle driven by Jessie Moline, 19, of Ventura about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Witnesses told police the traffic light had turned yellow and Moline accelerated to get through the intersection but ran a red light. Police are investigating.
Spargur was taken to the Ventura County Medical Center, where he died about 8:30 p.m. from multiple blunt-force injuries.
Spargur was executive director of the Sunrise Assisted Living senior complex in Ventura.
Wednesday’s collision was the second fatal accident at Johnson and Telephone in recent weeks. Yisha Xie, 36, and her daughter, Shan “Susan†Su, 7, were killed July 25 after they darted into traffic at the intersection and were hit by a truck.
Police say the high volume of traffic and the number of speeding vehicles make the intersection dangerous.
