Adults Behave Badly Too

Who are these self-righteous travelers demanding that parents keep their children at home and, as Ursula Sack recommends (“More on Traveling Tots,” Letters, April 21), not out in public? Who says bad behavior is restricted to children?

My mother has been a flight attendant for 35 years, and the stories she could tell you about the behavior of adults would shock you. She’s never had a child get drunk or violent on a plane.

Of course there should be places reserved for adults: gambling casinos, fine dining establishments etc. I believe that parents should do everything possible to raise socially conscious, thoughtful and considerate children, but I disagree with Sack’s philosophy of keeping them at home and never letting them venture out in public lest they offend someone. Children need opportunities to learn what is appropriate behavior.

That didn’t happen to a man who got drunk on a flight my mother was working, got up and urinated on one of the passengers. Perhaps Sack would prefer sitting next to him on her next flight, rather than a child who occasionally whines.
