Mexico-Cuba Rift Deepens

Calling Mexico’s human rights vote against Cuba “the last straw,” an angry President Fidel Castro on Monday played a recording of Mexican President Vicente Fox encouraging him not to attend a U.N. conference last month--contradicting Mexican officials’ earlier account of Castro’s sudden departure from the gathering.

“The aftermath of telling these truths could be that diplomatic relations are severed,” Castro said after playing a taped telephone conversation that took place about 24 hours before the Cuban leader planned to leave for the conference.

On the tape, Fox asks Castro to leave immediately after his scheduled speech, allegedly to avoid a politically awkward crossing with President Bush.
