Tow Truck Driver Held in Woman’s ’98 Slaying
Orange County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Costa Mesa tow truck driver in the death of a woman in 1998, saying they linked him to the crime with DNA from a blood trail at the crime scene.
Jeffrey Alan Smith, 23, is accused of fatally stabbing 50-year-old April Star during a robbery in her motel room at the Beach West Inn in Midway City.
Detectives believe he stabbed her during a struggle, but was injured, and left the blood trail--and the murder weapon.
