Water Whiners Should Do the Math on Flushing

Re “Flushing Away a Resource,” editorial, April 8:

We are all fortunate to live in a community where bodily waste products are removed from our presence by the mere flick of a lever. People in many parts of the world do not enjoy this sanitary convenience. Current plumbing codes require toilets that use only 1.6 gallons of water per flush. Older toilets use at least 31/2 gallons of water, and some more than 5 gallons. The use of “ultra-low-flow” toilets saves millions of gallons of water daily. People who whine about having to flush twice should do the math. Even double flushing of a modern toilet uses less water than the older models.
