Kids can take a gander at Gumby, get a peek at Pooh, catch a sneak preview of “Bear in the Big Blue House” and “Dora the Explorer” episodes or see international family films during the Coalition for Quality Children’s Media’s Kids First! Film, Video and DVD Festival 2002. The event’s screenings in three age groups (2 to 6, 6 to 12 and 12 to 15) will include the first big-screen showing in 25 years of Walt Disney’s “The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh,” Sesame Workshop’s new “Bert and Ernie’s Word Play” video, La Fete of Canada’s children’s film “My Little Devil” and other independent and studio releases. A panel discussion with kid media critics, ages 8 to 13, will be part of the May 4 finale.

“Protect Our Home, Protect Our Future” has a vaguely militaristic ring to it, but it’s the theme of this year’s green-and-friendly Whole Earth Festival this weekend at Lake Balboa Park. The two-day festival will feature musical performances by Richard Thompson, Michelle Shocked, John Tesh, Rita Coolidge, Peter Alsop, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Quetzal and others. Celebrity guests such as Ed Begley Jr., Wendie Malick, Max Gail, Esai Morales and Amy Smart will make appearances, and more than 200 booths and speakers representing various environmental, community-based and governmental organizations will be offering Earth-saving ideas.

Bass-baritone Thomas Quasthoff returns to sing with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra twice this weekend. The much-admired German singer, joining conductor Jeffrey Kahane and the ensemble, will sing Bach’s Cantata 56, “Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen,” and Ravel’s “Don Quichotte a Dulcinee.” Kahane leads the orchestra in Haydn’s Symphony No. 102 and Ginastera’s “Variaciones Concertantes.”

More than 100 artists will open their studios and lofts to the public for this weekend’s biannual Brewery Artwalk downtown. The Brewery, considered the world’s largest live-work artist complex, encompasses 22 buildings on 23 acres, the former site of a Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery. This weekend’s art walk will feature a wide range of artistic endeavors for collectors, including paintings, photographs, furniture, glass work, costumes, theatrical and movie sets, and computer games.
