State Beach Closed After Rise in Bacteria Levels

County health officials indefinitely closed nearly half a mile of Huntington State Beach’s shore--2,000 feet surrounding Magnolia Street--on Tuesday after finding frequent and puzzling increases in bacteria levels.
The cause remains unknown, although state and county officials suspect beach bathrooms may be leaking human waste into the surf. Officials could not say how long the beach would be closed, but warned it would be longer than the closures commonly caused by sewage spills.Officials said the beach has few visitors between now and the Memorial Day weekend.
