John Vargas is leaving Corona del Mar High after this season to coach the Stanford men’s water polo team, he confirmed Friday. Vargas began coaching the Sea Kings in 1983, leading them to four Southern Section titles and six final appearances between 1984-89. Corona del Mar also won Division II championships the last two seasons under Vargas.
“I’m very excited,” said Vargas, who also coached the U.S. men’s national team from 1996-2000. He will take over at Stanford Jan. 1 and replace retiring Dante Dettamanti.
