Redlands Gets Second Shutout

Redlands High proved it still has a few wrinkles to iron out on offense, but defensively the Terriers looked dapper Friday night
Redlands posted its second consecutive shutout to begin the season, defeating Riverside North, 17-0, at the University of Redlands.
“The goose egg,” said Redlands linebacker Ca’Shun Robinson, who snared one of two interceptions against the Huskies. “That’s what we expect every game.”
The Terriers, ranked 20th in the Times Southland rankings, lost two fumbles of their own, including one inside North’s one-yard line. But Redlands was rescued by the running of Ryan Rogers, a senior transfer from Redlands East Valley, who rushed for 191 yards in 13 carries and scored both touchdowns.
Rogers scored Redlands first touchdown with 29 seconds remaining in the first quarter on a 33-yard run. Rogers rushed for 112 yards last week in a 10-0 victory over Yucaipa, a margin of victory that was also closer than it could have been, considering Redlands killed several drives with ill-timed penalties.
“Hopefully we’ll get better,” said Redlands Coach Jim Walker. “It’s still preseason and were trying to get some of the bugs out.”
North’s running attack was weakened when running back Jaunte Howard tore a patella tendon in last week’s victory over Moreno Valley Rancho Verde. Ronnell Wilson and Joshua Barnett filled in, but combined for only 39 yards in 16 carries. North managed just three first downs on the ground.
After Jeremy Ito added a 36-yard field goal late in the first half to give Redlands a 10-0 lead, the Terriers moved inside North’s one-yard line on their opening drive of the second half. But Herman McBroom fumbled into the end zone and Adam Wright recovered for the Huskies.
Malcolm Cole got the ball back for Redlands after intercepting a pass from North sophomore quarterback Dion Morton at the Terrier 15. Two plays later, Rogers sped around right end and scored on an 80-yard touchdown run, giving Redlands a 17-0 lead with 26 seconds remaining in the third.
It was Redland’s fourth consecutive victory against North.
