French leaders joined more than 1,000 Christians, Jews and Muslims at the American Church in Paris to mourn.
President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and Cabinet ministers were among those who brushed away tears as they laid aside religious rifts to stand united against the acts of terror.
Also in Paris, a giant techno party at the foot of the Eiffel Tower planned for this weekend was canceled because police are too busy increasing security around the city.
Organizers of the Techno Parade had expected 100,000 ravers to throng to the Champ de Mars park at the tower. They said the event might go ahead later in the year.
Security concerns also prompted France to cancel plans to open government buildings and major landmarks to the public this weekend for an annual heritage event.
