Skateboarder Hit in Irvine Intersection

A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured Thursday when he rode his skateboard into the path of oncoming traffic at an Irvine intersection and was thrown 60 feet, police said.
Authorities did not release the name of the eighth-grader, who they said was enjoying a final day of summer before his school reopens today.
“Apparently the light changed while he was in the intersection,” said Sgt. Ron Flathers, a spokesman for the Irvine Police Department. “The first two lanes of traffic saw him and stopped. A car in the third lane didn’t.”
The accident happened about 1:15 p.m. at Culver Drive and Alton Parkway. The teen was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was in critical condition late Thursday, authorities said.
The driver was not cited, Flathers said. The accident is still under investigation.
