The daughters of two firefighters who died in the World Trade Center disaster met with First Lady Laura Bush to mark their selection as the first beneficiaries of a scholarship program for children of Sept. 11 victims.
Twins Tiffany and Yolanda Smith and Vernessa Richard will receive full scholarships from the United Negro College Fund to complete their college educations.
“All three of us know our fathers would want us to continue our educations,” said Richard, a senior at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C.
Her father, Lt. Vernon Richard, was a firefighter with Ladder Co. 7 of the New York Fire Department.
The Smith twins also attend Johnson C. Smith, as freshmen. Their father, Leon Smith Jr., was with Ladder Co. 118.
