A memorial service for Costa Mesa High football player Matt Colby will be Monday at 7 p.m. at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, according to a family spokeswoman.
Private funeral services have yet to be finalized.
Colby, 17, played linebacker. He suffered an apparent brain injury during the first half of a game Friday night against Huntington Beach Ocean View. He was taken by ambulance from Westminster High to UCI Medical Center in Orange, and taken off life support Sunday morning.
Autopsy results are pending.
Colby’s mother, Kelli Colby, and other family members are expected to attend Costa Mesa’s game Friday night against Whittier Christian at Newport Beach Newport Harbor High.
A patch honoring Colby will be sewn onto the jerseys, near the heart, of Costa Mesa and Estancia players. Colby transferred from Estancia to Costa Mesa for his senior season.
Estancia is scheduled to play Friday night against Orange High at Orange Coast. The patch, in the shape of a football, will display the Nos. 9 and 56, the numbers he wore for both schools.
The Matthew Colby Memorial Fund has been established to cover funeral costs and hospital bills. Leftover contributions will be donated to the Costa Mesa football program and used to build a scholarship fund.
