Runaway Kidd Finally Wins

History of sorts was made midway through the card at Hollywood Park on Wednesday.

After 35 defeats, Runaway Kidd, a 6-year-old Runaway Groom gelding, found a field he could beat and it wasn’t even close at the wire. He won by three lengths at 13-1, beating 10-1 outsider Damn The Torpedoes and seven others.

Now that Runaway Kidd has graduated, can My Whole Enchilada be far behind?

A 5-year-old daughter of Masterfully trained by Harry Nelson for a partnership, she, like Runaway Kidd, has lost 35 times, but unfortunately, she was scratched and her fans will have to wait for another day to see if she can graduate.

In her absence, Come Estrellita becomes the most proficient loser on today’s card. Listed at 15-1 on the morning line in today’s eighth, she has been beaten 17 times. In the fourth, Happy Fleet will try for the 14th time to break his maiden.

Kipper’s Kitten, the 8-5 favorite in today’s second, is no stranger to the winner’s circle. She has won seven times in her career and has rejoined the Jack Carava barn after being claimed for $40,000 on Oct. 27 at Santa Anita.

A 5-year-old Kipper Kelly mare, she has been claimed five times this year and she has done most of her winning for Carava.

Race of the day: With five entrants, the seventh doesn’t offer much in the way of betting possibilities, but it will be interesting to see how Mon Ange does in her first start around two turns. Trained by Richard Matlow for Merv Griffin, the Wolf Power filly has been impressive in two sprint wins.

Who’s hot: Jockey John Velasquez followed up his four stakes wins over the weekend with four victories Wednesday at Aqueduct.

Who’s not: Jockeys Isaias Enriquez, Chance Rollins and Felipe Martinez. Beginning Hollywood Park’s third week, they were a combined three for 68.

Exotically speaking: A pick four using Western Dawn and Sherri Shine in the fifth, Westmead Empress and Free Question in the sixth, Red Hot And Blue and Mon Ange in the seventh, and Stanford Honor and Shesmyhucklebery in the eighth.
