Patrick Jackson’s driving layup past four Kansas defenders went through the net with eight-tenths of a second to play, giving Ball State a 93-91 victory over the fourth-ranked Jayhawks on Monday in the first round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

The Cardinals advanced to today’s semifinal against No. 3 UCLA, which defeated Houston, 71-60.

Ball State (1-0) looked impressive in building a 55-48 halftime lead, but the Jayhawks, behind a career-high 31 points by junior forward Drew Gooden, rallied for a 70-68 lead with 12:17 to play on a drive by freshman Keith Langford. That was their first lead since 9-8.
