Firefighter Presence at WTC Site Doubled to 50

In an effort to ease tensions, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani doubled to 50 the number of firefighters working at the World Trade Center site.
Five police officers were hurt and 18 firefighters arrested when a rally Nov. 2 protesting Giuliani’s reduction in the number of firefighters at ground zero turned violent.
Giuliani cited safety concerns for his action, angering rank-and-file firefighters still traumatized by the loss of 343 colleagues Sept. 11.
The district attorney’s office said the firefighters who were arrested have been offered a deal under which the charges will be dropped after six months if they stay out of trouble.
