Hearing Begins in Alleged Police Beatings

A man testified Wednesday he was punched, kicked and falsely arrested last June, as a preliminary hearing opened in the case against three former police officers accused of beating suspects, planting evidence and filing false reports.
Kenneth Soriano, 20, was the first to take the stand against Clarence Mabanag, Jude Siapno and Matthew Hornung, who worked the night shift in west Oakland and were known as “The Riders.†Investigators believe alleged ringleader Frank Vazquez has fled the country. The hearing is expected to last two weeks.
