Center-Left Wins Three Key Mayoral Elections

Two weeks after losing to Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right alliance in a general election, Italy’s center-left coalition saved face somewhat by winning mayoral races in Turin, Rome and Naples.

In Rome, a key battleground, Walter Veltroni won with 52.2% of the vote. Rome’s former mayor, Francesco Rutelli, is head of the coalition that lost to Berlusconi.

“These results show we are a strong political force even after the victory of the right,†said Rutelli, who will now lead the opposition in Parliament.
