In another Division V match:
Cantwell Sacred Heart 3, Brethren Christian 2--Jamie Diaz had 27 kills and Johnny Serfozo added 25 as Cantwell won, 7-15, 15-10, 15-12, 13-15, 15-13, Tuesday at Calvary Chapel.
Brethren Christian Coach Jon Bahnsen didn’t hesitate when asked where his team might have lost the match.
“The third game,” he said. “We made too many mental errors.”
The previously undefeated Warriors put six serves into the net in the critical third game, allowing Cantwell (23-3) to turn a 5-2 deficit into an 11-8 lead. Cantwell won the game, 15-12, to take a two-games-to-one lead.
“It’s fine if you’re serving tough,” Bahnsen said, “but we were trying to pick spots instead of putting the ball in play.”
Brethren Christian won the fourth game to even the match and built leads of 4-0 and 7-2 in the deciding fifth game.
But the Cardinals rallied again, eventually taking a 14-11 lead. The Warriors fought off several match points and closed to within 14-13 on a kill by Eric MacDonald, before finally falling.
“We knew what they were going to bring,” said Cantwell Coach Franco Macchia, whose team had met Brethren Christian in two, single-game tournaments earlier this year.
MacDonald had 26 kills and Steve Cross added 20 for Brethren Christian, which ended the most successful season in team history with the loss.
