Big Sister and More
“My life was money, men and champagne--not always in that order--until I got a little girl named Charmaine eight years ago,” said actress Jenifer Lewis in describing her experience as a Big Sister. Lewis was among those honored with a Woman of Achievement Award on behalf of Big Sisters of Los Angeles Professional Associates.
Co-star of Lifetime television’s “Strong Medicine,” Lewis says her love for Charmaine, now 13, has “changed her life.” Their relationship has so evolved over the years and Charmaine’s circumstances have changed to the point that Lewis is in the process of adopting her.
Actor Robert Cesario, a friend of Lewis’ since college, presented her with the award at the dinner at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Also honored for their support of community youth programs were Jeanie Buss, executive vice president of the L.A. Lakers, who received her award from Ann Meyers Drysdale; Iris Grossman, senior vice president, talent and casting, Turner Network Television, who received hers from actor Ed O’Neill; and Valerie Fitzgerald, Previews Director for Coldwell Banker and real estate correspondent for Entertainment Tonight, who accepted her award from Jamie Lee Curtis.
Pam Dawber, Big Sisters’ national spokeswoman for 14 years, emceed the event, which was co-chaired by Judy Knapp and Jennifer Bellah Maguire. Big Sisters co-presidents Jan R. Cloyde and Elaine Lasnik-Broida report proceeds exceeded $225,000.
