Angolan rebels reportedly abducted 60 orphans ages 10 to 18 in a midnight raid in the town of Caxito, possibly to use them for slave labor, aid workers said.
Officials had already reported that as many as 79 people died in an attack on the town Saturday. The attack was blamed on the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola, or UNITA.
The rebels kidnapped 51 boys and nine girls from a boarding school for war orphans outside Caxito, about 40 miles northeast of the capital, Luanda, a school spokeswoman said. Two adults were also seized.
