Chief Reports Police Meeting Reform Goals
Police officials told the City Council on Tuesday that they are making headway in complying with a reform plan instituted by the California attorney general this spring.
In February, the City Council agreed to a plan by Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer to rid a troubled Police Department of racism and civil rights violations.
The pact marked the first time that Lockyer’s office has imposed such a plan on a police department--a role typically reserved for the federal government.
Tuesday, Police Chief Russell Leach delivered his first progress report to the City Council and said the department is “on target†with the terms of the plan. Leach also reported that his staff has developed a good relationship with Lockyer’s office.
The Police Department has already launched a campaign to better monitor roll calls, reduce the ratio of officers to supervisors and improve training in firearms judgment and the use of nonlethal weapons, Leach said.
