In his May 5 essay, “Bravely Staring Into the Sun,†Christopher Nyerges highlights his own idyllic existence, taking extra time to let his lunch cook slowly in his solar oven, listening to his solar radio and contemplating turning the (solar) clock back to AD 1200. Sadly, not everyone has a job teaching refugees from the business world how to live off scorpion juice in the wilderness for a weekend. Since I personally have to travel 26 miles to work, use a computer and fax machine and cook dinner by moonlight, I’m stuck in 2001. In this century, the adobe homes in the desert taking advantage of the inexhaustible sun are $3-million getaways in Palm Springs with a dozen $7,000 solar panels on the roof.
