Federal antitrust enforcers approved Univision Communications Inc.’s purchase of USA Networks Inc.’s broadcast group for $1.1 billion, the companies said in a prepared statement.
Univision, owner of the top U.S. Spanish-language television network, and USA Networks announced the combination in December 2000. It gives Univision 13 stations as well as USA Networks’ minority interests in four more stations.
Los Angeles-based Univision says it plans to launch a second Spanish-language network with these stations to meet the growing demand for Spanish-language news and entertainment in the U.S.
The new network is expected to begin broadcasting in January, the company said.
