Coastcast to Cut Jobs, Shift Work to Mexico
Coastcast Corp., the No. 1 maker of stainless steel and titanium golf club heads, said it will cut about 120 jobs in the next 60 days as it halts production of steel club heads at a California facility. Coastcast will shift steel club head casting to plants in Mexico to compete better with companies in Asia that have lower labor costs, the Rancho Dominguez-based company said in a statement. Officials didn’t return a phone call seeking comment. Although the company said it will suspend almost all manufacture of steel club heads at the Rancho Dominguez plant, production of orthopedic implants and surgical tools will continue at that facility. A Gardena plant will keep making titanium club heads. Coastcast’s customers include Callaway Golf, Cleveland, Cobra, Ping and Titleist. Shares of Coastcast, which have lost more than half their value in the last year, fell 51 cents, or 6%, to close at $8.20 on the New York Stock Exchange.
