Coburn Leads UC Irvine to Big West Golf Title
UC Irvine, led by sophomore Jeff Coburn’s 67, shot a final-round team total 289 Tuesday at Serrano Country Club in El Dorado Hills and won its first Big West Conference team title.
The Anteaters shot a three-round total of 859 and finished five strokes ahead of UC Santa Barbara and Pacific, which tied for second.
UC Santa Barbara’s Jeff Wood shot a final-round 73 and held on to win the individual title with a seven-under 209 total, one stroke ahead of Coburn.
Anteater senior Eric Wang, who played at Cypress High and Saddleback College, shot a 71 Tuesday to finish one under par in a tie for fifth.
Irvine sophomore Ryan Armstrong finished in a tie for 10th place with Luke Sestero of Boise State at three over.
Irvine’s Mike Lavery and Justin Ohye finished five over and tied for 13th.
In Golden State Athletic Conference baseball:
Vanguard 8, Concordia 0--Anthony Walker allowed only three hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out seven to improve to 9-3 for Vanguard (28-19, 15-13). Mike Bair’s three-run double highlighted a six-run first inning for the Lions.
