Evolution Revisited
* How ironic that on the same day that Meave Leakey makes a startling new discovery about the origins of humankind (“Discovery of an Ancient Skull Clouds the Origins of Humans”), a committee of the Arkansas Legislature recommends that the theory of evolution be banned from textbooks (March 22). Rep. Denny Altes is worried that kids will “act like monkeys.”
In fact, the teaching of evolution will not harm our children. They will learn that we are all descended from the same basic genetic family tree. When viewed in this light, discrimination and intolerance based on simple differences, such as the color of one’s skin, are exposed as stupid and reprehensible.
