Kennedy ‘Starting Over’ After Losing Three Key Players
Kennedy High’s chances of making a run at the City Championship title were dealt a severe blow this week.
Shortstop Marlena Aguirre and catcher Briana Matheisen were dismissed from the team Monday for violating team rules, Coach Barbara Rodrigue said.
Tuesday morning, pitcher Ryane Montes quit after saying she didn’t want to play on the team anymore, Rodrigue said.
That leaves the Golden Cougars with five returning starters from last year’s 21-4 team that lost to eventual champion San Pedro, 9-8, in the City Championship semifinals.
“We’re starting over,†Rodrigue said. “And we’re building character. We’ve still got some great ballplayers here.â€
Matheisen, who batted .492 and .519 in her first two seasons, quit the team midseason last year following a hand injury.
To help fill the void, catcher-outfielder Aurea Stichter was promoted from the junior varsity.
